A Reusable Blueprint for Interactive 5E Learning Modules

Published 23 August 2025

Interactive e-learning projects often start with the tools and visual assets, while the project plan becomes a collection of documents that shifts as the work goes on. Scoping, content mapping and build workflows are then reinvented for each new module.

A structured blueprint takes much of the guesswork out of that process. This one is designed for pedagogically sound, interactive learning experiences, and it is built around the 5E Model.

From theory to a plan

The 5E Model is a framework for guiding learners through a structured discovery process. Its five stages are:

Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate

Turning that theory into a working interactive module still needs a project plan. The work plan breaks the project into five phases, so nothing is missed between kickoff and launch.

The five phases

Phase 1

Discovery and scoping

Define the foundation before building anything: identify the learning objectives, analyse the target audience, and agree the technical scope with subject matter experts (SMEs) and stakeholders. This phase helps prevent scope creep later.

Phase 2

Content strategy and design

Map existing content to the 5E framework, design an interactive activity for each stage, and create wireframes or prototypes. The focus is the learning experience, not just presenting information.

Phase 3

Development and implementation

Set up the development environment, build the interactive components, and integrate the content and assets according to the design.

Phase 4

Quality assurance and launch

Quality assurance, user acceptance testing (UAT) and launch.

Phase 5

Support and maintenance

Post-launch support and maintenance, so the module stays effective and functional after deployment.
