What is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is a Google AI tool that works from your own sources. You add documents such as PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, web pages and videos, then ask questions, get summaries and build study aids that are based on that material instead of the whole internet.
Answers include small numbered citations. Click one and it jumps to the passage in your source that supports the statement, so you can check it in seconds. That source-checking habit is the most useful thing to learn.
A note on the name: Google's help pages now refer to the product as Gemini Notebook. It is the same tool, so you may see either name.

Toolbox talks

Good to know
- Audio is available in more than 80 languages.
- You can add a prompt to focus on specific topics or set the level of expertise.
- Choosing a shorter or longer overview is English only.
- Interactive mode lets you join the conversation and ask questions, in English for new overviews.
- Generation can take several minutes, and you need edit access to the notebook.
- Google warns that Audio Overviews are AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches.
How to make one
- Open your notebook and add your sources.
- In the Studio panel, choose Audio Overview.
- Pick a format, add any focus instructions, then generate.
- Play the result, and check anything important against the sources.

Only add documents you are allowed to share with an AI tool. Client drawings, contracts, pricing and personal information need extra care, so check your company policy and the privacy settings of the Google account you use. Work and school accounts through Google Workspace come with additional data protection.
Use AI as a guide, not the final word
AI is powerful, and tools like this help keep answers on track, but they can still be wrong or out of date. Always review the outputs yourself. Make sure any codes, standards or regulations they quote are current and match your local specifications before you rely on them.
